The Ring – A Real Life Genealogy Mystery Solved

There’s something intriguing about a genealogy mystery, especially when it happens in real life and not in a book or a movie. The particular mystery that I learned about today is even more intriguing to me because it involves a place that I have visited before, Kittery, Maine. What’s more, this real-life New England genealogy lost and found mystery was solved just a few days ago by a professional genealogist from Utah. The story began a few weeks ago when a resident of Berwick, Maine found a ring on a beach near Kittery. Fortunately, the ring had an inscription so … Continue reading

Mystery Solved!

My great grandfather was born to a single mother in 1898. She never disclosed who the father was, or if she did, it was kept secret by anyone who knew. She married a man within a few years of my great grandfather’s birth, and my great grandfather assumed his stepfather’s last name. It is unknown if he was ever officially adopted. I first became aware of my great grandfather’s illegitimate birth when I first began diving into my genealogy. There were a few theories as to who the biological father was: a traveling businessman, a married man, or even a … Continue reading

So Why All the Mystery?

I hope you’re not too fed up with hearing about my uterus. It’s a pretty big deal for me, and a pretty major surgery on the horizon… so I’ve got a lot of processing to do. One lingering question isn’t so much about the health issue itself but about the mystery surrounding it. Why was my regular doctor not willing or able to make a definitive diagnosis when another doctor — faced with the same exact report from the ultrasound — did? I’ve come up with a few possibilities. For one thing, maybe the level of expertise is part of … Continue reading

My Mystery, Solved!

Did you miss me? I missed you! But my computer’s breakdown came at a pretty opportune time, as it gave me a few days to focus on my health. Here’s the latest news. First, a quick recap: a pelvic exam suggested that I might have fibroids. My doctor ordered an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis, but the results weren’t quite clear. I was handed off to a teaching clinic for more testing. Or so I thought. The doctor walked into the exam room and greeted me with a cheery, “So, you’re here to talk about surgery?” After I picked my … Continue reading

Steve Fossett: The Mystery Solved?

If you remember, millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett went missing after he took off on a solo flight last September 3rd. For a month, the Civil Air Patrol searched for him and his plane, to no avail. The search was finally called off and Fossett, per the request of his wife, was declared legally dead on February 15, 2008. (This photo is in the public domain because it was created by NASA.) Still, people wondered what happened to Fossett. After all, 63 year old Fossett was an accomplished pilot, having set 93 aviation world records. Searches in the Nevada desert that … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: One Hot Hotel and the Mystery Behind Hotel Soap

ONE HOT HOTEL In a previous blog I touted the generosity of Hollywood billionaire David “DreamWorks” Geffen who recently donated his newly renovated hotel in Malibu to area residents displaced by the raging wildfires. Geffen’s posh Malibu Beach Inn hadn’t even hosted its first full house of new customers before the devastating fires erupted and the Hollywood mogul turned his property into a shelter for firefighters and evacuees. The inn’s manager told news reporters they couldn’t stomach having spare rooms available and not offering them to those in need. Fire victims are currently staying for free at the luxurious inn … Continue reading

Celebrity Updates: Mysteries Solved

Granted, I don’t know all the details of Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s divorce, but I can’t help but wonder what the actress thinks about the current state of her ex-husband’s life. After all, no matter how hard she may try to concentrate on her own life there is no escaping the inordinate amount of press coverage Pitt and current flame Angelina Jolie constantly generate between their growing brood and charitable work—news of the couple makes headlines on a daily basis. But I digress. The topic of this blog is celebrity mysteries and one of them has evidently been solved … Continue reading

The Great Mosquito Feast

Why is it that biting insects are drawn to some people and not to others? Is there a way to change your body chemistry to make you less palatable to mosquitos, chiggers and other pests that love to suck your blood? My husband is one of those lucky people to whom bugs never seem to bother. He could walk through, sweaty, an infested swap and not get a single bite. I can walk from the parking lot to the entrance of Target, surrounded by and and concrete and arrive at the door with several bites in the summer. Coincidentally, I … Continue reading

Laundry Tips

You know how they say that the dryer eats socks? I really believe this is true. How else do you explain your son putting his track clothes into the washer, you transferring them to the dryer and then the next morning when pulling them out, finding that one sock is missing? This wasn’t a big load and it didn’t fall next to the washer or dryer. So it is a mystery that will probably never be solved. I remember this being a much bigger issue when my three children were small. Trying to find socks that match and stayed with … Continue reading
